Oh my gosh… I can’t even. The way he looks at them… The way he yearns for their companionship. The way he melts their hearts. They adore each other.
As a plurally married woman with a child now, I find myself in a dual role. Drew, Lenny, and I make up our own little family unit, while also being part of a larger family unit. I often feel badly, like I’m imposing on the kids if I ask them to play with Lenny, and especially guilty if it’s because I need to get something done. But then I see them together and I realize they love each other so much! The children light up when I bring Lenny into a room. Everything else often stops preceding echoes of “Lenny!!!!” enthusiastically repeated with each child around. He’s their baby brother, after all.
Yesterday I walked by the girls room and found Kyra there alone in bed in the middle of the day so I slipped in to see how she was doing. She had slipped on some water that got spilt on the floor and felt sad. So I laid Lenny down next to her in an effort to cheer her up. And she was cheered up so! There is often a [playful] fight to be the one to hold Lenny. But at this time, Kyra found herself without any competition, and that, I could tell, made her very happy when her face lit up the room. They just sat blissfully quiet together. Oh, my heart.
And then there was Jocelyn. As she walked down the hallway she was lured in by the babbles of her baby brother. Kyra brought out her picture book that Mama April got her for Christmas and Lenny was very interested. Kyra was excited to show us her favorite ones, which included one where she looked taller than all her sisters in the picture (she is by far the smallest for her age!).
As they shifted their bodies and the conversation, I noticed Lenny looking intently and enthusiastically at his sisters…
He was eating up their attention. And they adored him doing so. Finally, Laurelei came in for some bonding time! Lo and behold, Lenny had room in his heart for her, too!
One of the beautiful things about plural marriage is all the potential to be surrounded by extra love and support. It’s the same for the adults and children alike. I am so happy to have these little girls loving on Lenny. It brings me joy to know that they bring him joy. He is loved in our family so much more than I could love him myself. <3
